Gender and Armed Conflict
This course examines gendered dimensions of armed conflict in the post-Cold War era, with particular attention to case studies from Sub-Sahara Africa. It is organized into two sections. Part one examines how and why violence against civilians in armed conflicts is both ‘sexed’ and gendered. Part two considers gendered processes and practices – national and international – of peace building after armed conflict. Students will be provided learning opportunities to analyze case studies and to critique theoretical and policy approaches to gender, armed conflict and peace-building.
