Assignments

Assignments are based on class participation (with differing expectations for 403 and 503 students, read below) and a research paper option (one or two, below). 503 students are expected to meet the same requirements as 403 in the research paper, but will be graded at a graduate student level.

Class Participation

403 - Class Participation (20 percent):

Students are expected to come to class having read assigned readings beforehand (eg. all readings by the Tuesday class) and prepared to actively participate in class discussions. The focus of discussion will be to dissect, analyse and critique the readings.

503 - Class Participation (20 percent):

Same expectation as above, but graduate students will also be expected to read and write a 6 page review essay together of the following books, applying a gender perspective and to collectively present this on the final day of classes (review essay also due that day).

1.Inside Rebellion, Jeremy Weinstein

2.The Logic of Violence in Civil War, S. Kalyvas

3.Killing Civilians, Hugo Slim

Research Paper Options

Using a case study of a peace-building effort in the post-Cold War era, how does the state rely upon men and women to play specific gender roles and with what security outcomes?

Ootion 2: one long research paper

In option two, students can chose one of the two research topics above and write one 25 page paper, using at least 25 sources (12pt font, double spaced, double sided, numbered).
